Vitamin B12 and Weight Loss

Vitamin B12 plays a critical role in healthy aging and overall weight management. If your body doesn’t have enough Vitamin B12 to make red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout your body, you may be unable to efficiently transport oxygen to your body’s cells, making you feel too tired and weak to exercise. Similarly, Vitamin B12 is also essential in the metabolism of fatty acids and proteins. Fatty acids are important in the body because that is where energy is stored. A deficiency in Vitamin B12 leads to inefficient use of energy, making it more difficult to do physical activities for weight loss.

A Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur when you do not get enough B12 in your diet or because your body is unable to absorb the vitamin properly. This can be caused by certain factors. Older people are susceptible to deficiency because they do not produce enough hydrochloric acid in their stomachs to absorb the Vitamin B12 in the food they eat. Methylcobalamin vs Cyanocobalamin
There are two primary sources of B12 in supplements: methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. Methylcobalamin is also active within the human body and found mainly in blood plasma, cytosol cells and certain body fluids like cerebral spinal fluid.

Cyanocobalamin, or Cyano B12, is a synthetic form of B12 that is not found in nature and is used more frequently in lower-grade supplements as it is cheaper than Methyl B12. Cyano B12 (and the supplements that contain them) are cheaper, but it does come with a price. The body must use a demanding methylation reaction process to separate the B12 out of this synthetic form so that it can be converted to a usable, absorbable form. As a result, it can take more than 48 hours for cyanocobalamin to eventually convert to usable B12, and even then only a small amount of converted and absorbed.
